How to pick the right apple for the job
Did you know that you cannot pick just any apple to bake and cook with? There are many different types of apples and each one has its own set of characteristics. For example, if you plan on making an apple pie, would you rather choose an apple variety that turns to mush once cooked or another that holds its shape?
When you plan on baking with apples, go for an apple that has a crispy texture. For my apple roses recipe, pick from one of the many types of red apples. Personally, I really like to use one of the newest apple varieties for this recipe.

As I mentioned earlier, Cosmic Crisp apples are best stored in your refrigerator’s crisper. But here is an extra tip. You can really extend their shelf life by placing the apples in a plastic bag with holes in it or cover the apples with a damp paper towel.

How to make puff pastry apple roses
Don’t be intimidated by this elegant rose motif apple rose pastry. They are actually so easy to make.
Once you have thinly sliced a couple of Cosmic Crisp apples, all you have to do is use the jam and rose water as glue when lining up the apple slices on strips of puff pastry. Add a touch of cinnamon if you like, roll them up (it’s so easy), and bake them in a muffin pan.
If you are not a fan of rose water feel free to omit it in the apple rose puff pastry, or use a different sweet syrup of your liking. You can also add more than the recipe suggests if you are a rosewater lover.

Puff Pastry Apple Roses with Rose Water
- 2 Cosmic Crisp apples
- 1/2 juice of a lemon
- 2 tablespoons apricot jam
- 2 teaspoons water
- 1 teaspoon rose water
- 1 frozen puff pastry sheet thawed
- flour for dusting
- cinnamon optional
- Preheat the oven to 375F.
- Slice the apples with the skin on in half, remove the core, and slice apples into thin slices.
- Add the lemon juice to a bowl filled with cold water. Add apple slices and add water making sure to cover all of the slices. Microwave it for 3 minutes (it helps soften the apple).
- In a small dish, mix the apricot jam, water, and rose water. Microwave it for 1 minute.
- Drain the apples in a colander.
- Flour the counter and the dough, roll out the sheet a bit with a rolling pin. Cut 6 strips on the long edge.
- Brush each strip with the apricot jam mixture. Place about 7 apple slices halfway up the dough.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon, then fold the strip over in half.
- Gently roll the dough to create a beautiful apple rose. Brush the roses with the remaining jam.
- Bake the roses for 45 minutes in a greased muffin pan, or until the dough is fully baked. Cool slightly.
