How to pick the right apple for the job

Did you know that you cannot pick just any apple to bake and cook with? There are many different types of apples and each one has its own set of characteristics. For example, if you plan on making an apple pie, would you rather choose an apple variety that turns to mush once cooked or another that holds its shape?

When you plan on baking with apples, go for an apple that has a crispy texture. For my apple roses recipe, pick from one of the many types of red apples. Personally, I really like to use one of the newest apple varieties for this recipe.

That is right, there is a new apple in town! An apple that has been 20 years in the making which has been available for just over one year. Meet the Cosmic Crisp Washington state apples. This apple is like no other.

How about them apples

Ready to fall in love with a new apple variety? Here are a few reasons why Cosmic Crisp Washington state apples are my new favorites:

  • Cosmic Crisp apples come from the crossing of Enterprise and Honeycrisp types of apples.
  • The Cosmic Crisp Washington state apple is non-GMO and was bred at Washington State University.
  • This apple is crispier and sweeter than other varieties. You will get a real bite out of these firm and crisp textured apples.
  • They have a lasting shelf life when stored in your refrigerator’s crisper, up to 12 months.
  • Finally, bakers rejoice, they are naturally slow to brown.

Cosmic Crisp apples are orchard-grown in all five growing regions in Washington State near the Columbia River.  With warm days and cool nights, an ideal climate in apple-growing regions.

Long-lasting and great for baking apples

Cosmic Crisp apples make the perfect snack or dessert. Did you know that they are also great for baking and cooking? Not only are they sweet and have a crispy texture, but they’re also naturally slow to brown. No more slicing apples till the last minute or lemon water baths.

As I mentioned earlier, Cosmic Crisp apples are best stored in your refrigerator’s crisper. But here is an extra tip. You can really extend their shelf life by placing the apples in a plastic bag with holes in it or cover the apples with a damp paper towel.

You can buy Cosmic Crisp apples across the US and now also across Canada in major grocery store chains. Look for them in the produce aisle or ask for directions to the Cosmic Crisp display.

How to make puff pastry apple roses

Don’t be intimidated by this elegant rose motif apple rose pastry. They are actually so easy to make.

Once you have thinly sliced a couple of Cosmic Crisp apples, all you have to do is use the jam and rose water as glue when lining up the apple slices on strips of puff pastry. Add a touch of cinnamon if you like, roll them up (it’s so easy), and bake them in a muffin pan.

If you are not a fan of rose water feel free to omit it in the apple rose puff pastry, or use a different sweet syrup of your liking. You can also add more than the recipe suggests if you are a rosewater lover.
