Ketchup and Beans Salad with Spinach for Popeye

Making your own homemade ketchup is so rewarding, and a millions times healthier than the bottled crap.  Find below one of the original recipes from 1906.

It’s Food ‘n Flix time again! In this monthly group a host picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe you want. This month’s pick is hosted by Elizabeth at The Lawyer’s Cookbook and she picked a really original movie: Popeye! No, spinach was not the main inspiration for my recipe but there is some in there. I was actually inspired by a book I was reading and by ketchup, the condiment. That turned into a Ketchup and Beans Salad with Spinach!

Saying Goodbye to Cheap Ethnic Eatz with the Best of 2015

So this is it! Not only is this the last post of 2015, but it will be my last post under the name Cheap Ethnic Eatz! I announced a few days ago my new name for my blog rebrand: CulturEatz.

The end of the year and the last post of 2015 are the perfect setting to say goodbye to Cheap Ethnic Eatz. I want to thank every member who’s ever joined the dinner group I ran from 2007 to 2011. They are the ones who inspired me to start a blog in the first place. Cheap Ethnic Eatz will have lived for 8 1/2 years. It has changed a lot over the years. And now it is a cocooned caterpillar that is about to emerge into a beautiful butterfly.

Attack of the Killer Squashed Tomatoes Baguette

This Attack of the Killer Squashed Tomatoes Baguette is a fun take on the classic Caprese Italian combo of sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, herbs, flavored with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Welcome to a very special edition for Food ‘n Flix because this month we are celebrating the 5th anniversary of this wonderful movie/food group. And we were allowed to revisit any movie from the past 5 years for September. I chose a movie that was played prior to my arrival, one that I knew was ultra silly but sounded like fun. The flic?

A Meal out of Three Cookbooks

A great selection of three cookbooks with themes are used to build a wonderful 3-course meal.

The internet is an infinite source for recipes, no one can deny that, but sometimes sitting in your favorite chair and leafing through a cookbook can be really relaxing and gratifying. Cookbooks also have a great knack for gathering a whole bunch of recipes on a specific theme. Today I will give you a brief introduction to such three cookbooks I received recently: Spiralizer, Slow-cooker and Vegetarian Thai.

A Meal out of 3 great Cookbooks

I have savored my time leafing through these cookbooks and testing out some of the recipes lately. I am including the main description of the books, a recipe and a “my-2-cents” paragraph for each. Bon Appetit!

Lebanese Shish Taouk: now this is an amazing recipe

Who could resist beautifully grilled cubes of chicken – known as Lebanese Shish Taouk – that are marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, tomato puree, loads of garlic and exotic spices.

It’s time for the MENA (Middle Eastern & North African) Cooking Group. This monthly group has for goal to help us discover the culture and cuisine of the countries found in these parts of the world. The host of the month will choose a savory and a sweet dish from the country and the members pick one dish to make. Get your luggage ready as we are exploring Lebanon this month.

The Terminal: Food ‘n Flix Roundup

At the beginning of this month, I announced that I would be hosting Food ‘n Flix with my chosen movie The Terminal. I love all the groups I am part of but I have to say there is a level of exchange with this group I just don’t get with others. Not only do we cook from a same inspiration, we also discuss the movies. It creates a real virtual conversation.
