Traditional Oliebollen | Dutch Doughnuts

Oliebollen are a fantastic Dutch New Year’s Eve treat. These Dutch doughnuts are made from a thick yeast dough peppered with dried fruits and apples which is fried till perfectly golden.

Can you guess what I will be having for breakfast every day this holiday week? Oh yeah some oliebollen! Oliebollen is a Dutch doughnuts (or donut I never know) that is the quintessential Dutch treat for New Year’s Eve. Apparently over 80% of the Dutch population consumes oliebollen on between Dec 26th/Jan 06th. With this recipe I wish you my readers a very Tasty, Happy and Healthy New Year 2017!

Beetlejuice Swiss Roll Cake for Halloween

BOO! The cute &  adorable Japanese deco Swiss Roll Cake recipe was hijacked this month to create a gousligh Beetlejuice movie themed cake for Halloween.

I am always super excited to present my big main Halloween post each year! And this year, with my goolish Halloween recipe, I got to knock down two skeletons with one big candy (ha ha). This post combines both the October 2016 challenges for Food ‘n Flix and the Daring Kitchen. The movie for Food ‘n Flix was Beetlejuice. The Daring Kitchen challenge was a decorated swiss roll cake. Hence, my evil mind gave birth to the scary themed Beetlejuice Swiss Roll Cake! Do you dare to take a bite?

Meet the Hrapocusa (Croatian Dol Cake)

Nut lovers will go nuts for the Croatian torta Hrapocusa, or  Dol Cake. The almond cake supports a massise walnut topping, all held together with loads of sugar and eggs.

Well this is officially my first Croatian recipe here on CulturEatz! Not only that but the torta Hrapocusa specifically comes from a small village of Dol, on the Croation island of Brac. You and I may have never heard of it before, but over there the cake is a huge deal.  They say every family in Dol has their own secret recipe. And there is an annual Night of Hrapocusa event where the population goes from about 100 inhabitants to over a 1,000 people.

Why Kouign Amann Will Change your Hips

The Breton Kouign Amann pastry is utter heaven in a bite. The recipe calls for lots of butter, barely held together with flour and sugar. I am sure once you try it you will be hooked for life. Sorry hips you’re gonna get bigger!

I am so late on this one, this was the April 2016 Daring Kitchen assignment and life got in the way. But I had to do it because Kouign Amann is one of those pastries where I melted IN love at first bite…and it became my nemesis in the kitchen. Finally, for once, I won the battle! Sweet delicious victory!

Gobi Pakora, an Indian Cauliflower Fritter

Aromatic spiced bouquets of cauliflowers are drenched in batter and lightly fried. The result is a classic Indian snack called Gobi Pakora.

I still remember very clearly the first time I went to an Indian restaurant. I was probably 16 and my friend, Helen 23, had suggested it. This lunch was probably the first defining exotic meal I had, one of the first bricks of a path I built that lead me down this blog adventure. So thank you Helen! I remember I played it safe and ordered Chicken Tandoori. But I fell in love. I am not sure what else I had that time but the following Indian meals often included today’s recipe, a staple snack or vegetable side dish, Cauliflower fritters known as Gobi Pakora.

Coconut Modak, a sweet Indian dumpling

A Modak is a delicate preparation of coconut and jiggery filled in a tender rice flour covering that is later steamed to produce a delicacy for Lord Ganesha.

I am slow to comment back and I do apologise, I am at the cottage for the week, this and my last post were written by the lake. But I did prepare 2 dishes with here so don’t be surprised by the old dishes in the pics ha ha.

As a food blogger we always want to appear our best and that we are above screwing up a recipe. Well trust me, it may not happen often, but sometimes we fail a recipe miserably. This is one of those times. I think it is just as important and funny to share. Maybe it will help convince my friends terrified to invite me over for a home cooked meal a change of heart lol. My failure recipe is the normally delicious Coconut Modak.

Algerian Griwech Pastries

These intricate Algerian Griwech pastries are made from contortioned dough into elaborate shapes, then fried and coated by a syrup and sesame seeds.

The word griwech translates to “crunchy” and that is a perfect description of the texture, yet they remain very delicate and are beautifully perfumed with orange blossom water. Algerian Griwech are very popular during religious celebrations, weddings and during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan which is just about to end.
