Beetlejuice Swiss Roll Cake for Halloween

BOO! The cute &  adorable Japanese deco Swiss Roll Cake recipe was hijacked this month to create a gousligh Beetlejuice movie themed cake for Halloween.

I am always super excited to present my big main Halloween post each year! And this year, with my goolish Halloween recipe, I got to knock down two skeletons with one big candy (ha ha). This post combines both the October 2016 challenges for Food ‘n Flix and the Daring Kitchen. The movie for Food ‘n Flix was Beetlejuice. The Daring Kitchen challenge was a decorated swiss roll cake. Hence, my evil mind gave birth to the scary themed Beetlejuice Swiss Roll Cake! Do you dare to take a bite?

Ramen Burger with Teriyaki Sauce

An instant Ramen soup mix transforms itself into a noodle bun to make a perfectly modern Japanese Ramen Burger with Teriyaki Sauce!

It’s Food ‘n Flix time again! In this monthly group a host picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe you want. This month’s pick is hosted by Heather of All Roads Lead to the Kitchen, who suggested a great movie called Tampopo which is all about Ramen soup. My dish presents a currently trendy twist: the Ramen Burger with a Teriyaki Sauce.

Bean Vegan Lately? Brazilian Vegan Feijoada & Red Bean Ice Cream

More beans are good for you! Here are two great recipes to add to your recipe rotation: Vegan Feijoada and Japanese Red Bean Ice Cream.

For as long as I can remember my mom has been on the hunt for good recipes with beans and legumes. This has influenced me a bit too as I may not search for such recipes as actively but if they fall in my lap my curiosity will be piqued. When I was offered the Vegan Beans from Around the World cookbook for review I could hardly say no. The ‘around the world’ part obviously increased my interest. Would it love up to my high expectation? Let’s find out with the two recipes I prepared from this cookbook: the Brazilian Vegan Feijoada and the Japanese Red Bean Ice Cream.

Media Outings: Je t’aime en Chococlat & Wafu on Dragon’s Den

One fun perk about running a food blog is getting the occasional media event invite. After a while they sort of all blend together. Well this time I got 2 really original invitations I could not pass up: one by Je t’aime en Chocolat, the 3rd annual chocolate fair the weekend before St-Valentines Day, and Wafu, a Montreal company that specializes in Japanese dressings and mayonnaise, which recently appeared on Dragon’s Den.

The Je t’aime en Chococlat event is brimming with artisan chocolates from all over the Province of Quebec. I was spoiled with so many sample and the 5 friends that came with me enjoyed the wonderful treats each kiosk gave away. Ganache and flavored caramels seemed to be quite in fashion. Some of the artisans present were:

Pickled Ginger for a Cucumber Carrot Ginger Salad

If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled ginger how many pickled gingers did Peter Piper pick?

This is the one English tongue twister that rolls of my tongue with ease. Well with peppers which I switched up for ginger. For this month’s Creative Cooking Crew challenge we were challenged to pickle something and then use our pickle in a recipe. Can you guess where I got this idea? Yes when I last ate sushi! I pickled my own ginger and then used it for my version of a Japanese salad: a Cucumber Carrot Ginger Salad.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi and the Shogun sauce

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

For some reason my title makes me think of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (rolls off the tongue the same way). But this post is not related and and I will be jumping from one topic to another. You are warned, just go with the flow hi hi.

I am so happy to share my second post and participation with a new monthly group I have discovered called Food ‘n Flix. Once a month a ‘host’ picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe. This month’s pick is hosted by Camilla at Culinary Adventures with Camilla. She picked a documentary style movie called Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

My Guest Post for My Cookbook Addiction: Peanut Butter Daifukumochi Balls

Out of commission as you saw from yesterday’s post…broken dislocated arm and wrist…..but this guest post was already written up…enjoy!

I have a very special guest post today, dedicated to my fellow foodie friend, Liliana from My Cookbook Addiction. Both being from the same city, I have had the pleasure to share a few meals with Liliana during our occasional friendly Montreal food blogger dinners. She has always been a great supporter of my work, always so encouraging. But what is most remarkable about Liliana is her generosity. The few times I have called on my readers for donations, either in the form of a small donation or a prizes for a charity event, Liliana has always lent a helping hand. This woman has a great big heart.

I was so very honored when Liliana asked me to guest post on her blog. As you can tell from the title of her blog, she has a thing for cookbooks. You will find tons of cookbook reviews where she cooks and presents one dish from her latest recipe book. Now on the ethnic front, she leans towards Italian recipes, having Italian blood running through her veins. I definitely wanted to prepare something different and challenging for her, in the same manner I always do for my blog.

I chose a wonderful Japanese sweet with a modern spin, Peanut Butter Daifukumochi Balls. Head over to Liliana’s blog to check out my guest post, recipe included. I hope you will give these little guys a try. They are so easy to prepare and have a fun unique texture and taste.
