Sitting Pretty Buttercups on Sand Tarts

Pennsylvania Dutch Sand Tarts are traditional Christmas sugar cookies know for their thin and crisp texture, and a light dusting of cinnamon. Yet they remain delicious and should be enjoyed year round!

OK let me here it! I know you are confused. “But Evelyne we are in May, Christmas is 7 months away. Why are you talking about these cookies?” Well they are my inspiration for this month’s Food ‘n Flix movie, The Princess Bride. And they would be perfect for Camper’s Christmas on June 25th. 😀 Sand and sugar were stuck in my brain after I saw the movie. How many recipe do you know that come from the concept of sand? This eventually blossomed into sand tarts, all topped with a buttercup in honor of the Princess Bride herself!

Simit Rings: the Turkish breakfast bagel

Turkish Simit Rings make for a wonderful breakfast option, a bit like our bagel. Each twisted circular bread is dipped in a sweet water and then encrusted with sesame or other various seeds before baking.

How many spices can you name off the top of your head? Even better, how many spice do you own? If new spices where on my shopping list I would love to make sure to find a store like the one Vassilis owns in the movie A Touch of Spice, in beautiful Istanbul. But for this Turkish Simit Rings recipe I would rather ask for his very best sesame seeds.

This Mars Ice Cream is Out of this World

Want to be the cool mom for your (young and old) kid’s next birthday party? Make this easy Planet Mars Ice Cream inspired by the movie The Martian.

No potatoes for me! Because potatoes is the main food of choice in this movie.  We were asked to watch the film The Martian and make an inspired recipe. And I knew most people would do potatoes. Got nothing against them, but I would loose points for my infamous crazy idea loopy creative reputation. So I came up with an ice cream.
Yep ………….. a Planet Mars Ice Cream!

An Andalusian Polea Porridge with Roasted Celery Root

Imagine yourself poor and starving, making the best with what you have to feed your family. This is exactly how the Andalusian Polea Porridge was created, a common dish consumed during the Spanish Civil War.

Sometimes you come across a recipe that is quite plain. But your evil mind wants to accompany the dish with a playful, forbidden and magical ingredient. Such was the case with my Andalusian Polea Porridge with Roasted Celery Root which was inspired by the mandrake root seen (and scene) in the movie Pan’s Labyrinth. Celery root was a safer alternative!
