Sweet Sipping on a Cherry Apricot Bulgarian Kompot

Want a completely new kind of fruit juice? Kompot is made by simmering fruits in a lot of water & a little sugar. Sip on this cherry apricot variation with a dose of fruit at the bottom of your glass.

This Cherry Apricot Bulgarian Kompot is my first Bulgarian recipe on Cultureatz, very exciting, but kompot recipes are common in most of the Central and Eastern European countries, as well Central Asia. And no, it has nothing to do with apple compote (a.k.a applesauce). In fact kompot is something you drink! It is a sweet beverage that can be served hot or cold.

Cold Sour Cherry Soup (Hideg Meggyleves)

Cold Sour Cherry soup, or Hideg Meggyleves, is the quintessential Hungarian summer soup. Made from fresh sour cherries, spices, a touch of sugar and sour cream, you are sure to fall in love with the delicate tartness and slight sweetness found in every chilled bite.

A fruit soup you say? Oh yes they are very common in Hungary. In fact while in Budapest a yogurt elderflower soup and a strawberry soup crossed yours truly’s lips. These summer soups are served mostly as an appetizer and only sometimes as a dessert. It does throw a North American palate for a loop at first but I was hungry for more in no time. This cold sour cherry soup is a bit more tart, making it a great starter dish.

It’s Food ‘n Flix time again! In this monthly group a host picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe you want. This month’s pick is hosted by Kimberly at Coffee and Casseroles and she picked The Witches of Eastwick. My summery recipe inspiration birthed from this film was a Cherry Pistachio Ice Cream. Good thing because as I write this post the expected temperature today is 38 C with the humidex!

Christmas Bundt Cake, Regency Style

Don’t you think guests would fall in love with this Christmas Bundt Cake? A bundt cake makes any cake look more festive; and the floral and ribbon touches evoke the Jane Austen setting for this month’s food film.

Fruity Santa Bread

What a surprise this Fruity Santa Bread will be when it is brought to the table with the other sweets! Chock-full of fruits and nuts, the bread will be sure to please all the good and naughty kids around.

Lots of bread baking in the air and #twelveloaves is a great group where we bake a bread with the addition of the monthly theme flavor or ingredient. And keeping with the season, we were asked to prepare a Holiday bread. An online search brought on a list of the same old thing until this chosen one grabbed by attention big time. Could I actually make the Fruity Santa Bread to look like Santa?

Deep Fried Coke with Sour Cherries

The Behind the Curtain Dessert Challenge is all about baking and making sweets. Every month we are given two required ingredients to work with. This month it was Coca Cola and Cherry. Yep soda, pop, cola, coke. A though one indeed. Then inspiration struck. Let’s try the crazy sounding Deep Fried Coke that is served at fair and carnivals. And to complete the requirement I just tossed in some chopped cherries. The result are nice puffy beignets of Deep Fried Coke with Sour Cherries.
