Cornish Bacon Egg Pye, Medieval Cooking Part 1

Let’s get our geek on and learn about history and math on this Pi Day with a special Medieval Cornish Bacon Egg Pye recipe.

Did you know that March 14th is Pi Day? And in 2016 it is also Pi rounded up to exactly 4 decimal points – 3.1416. OK math lesson is over but it is a great excuse to make pie! And our pie will travel back in time as well. I write a lot about recipes from different parts of the world, but today we will try something a little something different and explore another time. History has a lot to offer when it comes to culinary discoveries. This time machine trip will take us to Europe during the Middle Ages where we will explore how people ate, such as this 15th century Cornish Bacon Egg Pye.

Saying Goodbye to Cheap Ethnic Eatz with the Best of 2015

So this is it! Not only is this the last post of 2015, but it will be my last post under the name Cheap Ethnic Eatz! I announced a few days ago my new name for my blog rebrand: CulturEatz.

The end of the year and the last post of 2015 are the perfect setting to say goodbye to Cheap Ethnic Eatz. I want to thank every member who’s ever joined the dinner group I ran from 2007 to 2011. They are the ones who inspired me to start a blog in the first place. Cheap Ethnic Eatz will have lived for 8 1/2 years. It has changed a lot over the years. And now it is a cocooned caterpillar that is about to emerge into a beautiful butterfly.

Dulse Pull Apart Rolls with Chia, Flax and Sesame Seeds

Packed with 3 super healthy seeds, these fun Dulse Pull Apart Rolls with Chia, Flax and Sesame Seeds will win the heart of all bread lovers, especially those with a weakness for the sea!

Summer is going by too fast! It seems like it was just #twelveloaves a week ago but here we are already with my third participation. In this group we bake a bread every month with the addition of the monthly theme flavor or ingredient. This month we were asked to add seeds.

I was not even planning on participating this month because my schedule is just that insane! But I purchased a weird food ingredient (we love those at CEE) on my trip and I could fit it in my recipe, so here we are mixing up some dulse seaweed with chia, flax and sesame seeds.

It’s Food ‘n Flix time again! In this monthly group a host picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe you want. This month’s pick is hosted by Joanne from What’s on the List and she challenged us to travel back in time and to Ireland with The Quiet Man!

Sweetheart Maple Bacon Shortbread

Fact: the real way to obtain your sweetheart’s love is through their stomach…with bacon! And this Maple Bacon Shortbread is a sure fire way to please.

A few weeks ago I attended a most fabulous themed pot-luck party: bacon! Everyone had to bring a dish made with bacon. We had bacon guacamole, a bacon cheddar apple pie, scotch eggs, bacon chocolate cupcakes. That was like a third of the menu. I brought a Maple Bacon Shortbread as one of two contributions.

Looking at my cookie cutter shapes I decided to go for a heart shaped one. And as soon as the cookies came out of the oven I knew this recipe was perfect for Saint-Valentine’s Day.

Triple Decker Sandwich in B Major: Brie Blueberry & Bacon

Warm summer temperatures usually means smaller and lighter meals. Salads and sandwiches are often found at the dinner table. So this month’s Creative Cooking Crew really hit the spot with June’s challenge: make a triple decker sandwich with at least 3 ingredients starting with the same letter of the alphabet. This was music to my ears so I composed a symphony in B’s: a Brie, Blueberry and Bacon Triple Decker Sandwich.

Breakfast Pizza for Food N Flix

Do you sometimes re-watch a movie you just adored in your teen years to see if you still feel the same way? I do occasionally. Sometimes they are still good, sometimes not. There is one movie however that never fails to live up to my original satisfaction and it just so happens that this particular film is this month’s Food ‘n Flix choice. OK enough suspense, the movie is The Breakfast Club.

Now there are not many food references in the movie besides the title and the scene of the lunch break but inspiration came easy. What do teenagers like to eat? Junk food, especially pizza. What is the most important meal of the day? Breakfast of course. So I think this Breakfast Pizza would be a hit with all pre and post pubescents.
