Butter for Food ‘n Flix

Welcome to the cut throat world of butter carving in Iowa! Butter, a comedy about sex, power and spreading the wealth. There’s going to be a meltdown!

I bet our group leader Heather is relieved. I am so very honored to be hosting again this month’s edition of Food ‘n Flix … and I DID NOT choose a bride/marriage movie for the month of June (as I did last year). This month we are going down a silly route combining art, competition and sculpture with the movie Butter. Feel free to join our group, just watch the movie and then head into the kitchen to make a dish inspired by the film.

Vodka Gimlet and French Toast for the Mad Men Series Finale & Giveaway

Tripping back to the 60s with French Toast à la rum and Vodka Gimlet, a retro breakfast spread – cocktail included, for the Mad Men Series Finale!

What does it mean if you’re a man and you wear a hat in Mad Men? What concert is obliquely responsible for Peggy’s haircut? How many secretaries has Don had over the course of the show? Bert Cooper has a giant painting from which renowned artist hanging in his office? And why does Betty hate her neighbour? If you know the answers to any of the questions, you are for sure a hard core Mad Men fan.

I am going to finish season 5 tonight on Netflix. I am a bit late jumping on the bandwagon but I am loving the show. So I was thrilled to be asked to join the Virtual Mad Men Finale Party and host a Giveaway where you could win your own copy of the The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook.

Mimi la Nuit, Old Montreal

Just like any tourist, many Montreal locals may find themselves one evening in Old Montreal after a day of wandering around the cobble stoned streets with a pequish pang in their stomachs. The sad thing is many cheap eateries close early in this touristic spot and all is left are expensive tourist traps.

Well no more with this new kid in town: Mimi la Nuit, a small yet extravagant nightclub in Old Montreal, welcomes gourmets, wine lovers and night owls – with an open kitchen till 2 AM!

Bridget Jones’s Diary for Food ‘n Flix

Wishing you a wonderful New Year! May 2015 bring you health, prosperity, amazing food and happiness! I feel so privileged to start of a new year of Food ‘n Flix as the host for this January. This month I’m challenging you to watch Bridget Jones’s Diary, and then head into the kitchen to make a dish inspired by the film.

At the start of the New Year, 32-year-old Bridget decides it’s time to take control of her life — and start keeping a diary. Now, the most provocative, erotic and hysterical book on her bedside table is the one she’s writing. With a taste for adventure, and an opinion on every subject – from exercise to men to food to sex and everything in between – she’s turning the page on a whole new life.

Carrot Potato Mash for Remembrance Day

Today many countries around the world are paying homage to the fallen soldiers who died in the line of duty, a solemn memorial day commemorating the end of World War I. It is called Armistice Day, Veteran’s Day in the USA, and Remembrance day in the Commonwealth of which Canada is part of.

Times of war are often also times of famine, malnourishment, rations and making due with what you have. Easy things to grow were the backbone of most people’s diets: cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions. A common dish people served was Carrot Potato Mash. Easy, plain, even boring. I challenged myself give it a modern look as a dedication to every soldier who has ever fought for freedom and human rights.

Halloween Squid Ink Pasta with Pumpkin & Cured Epidermis

The makings of a grown up halloween dish: seasonal squash, homemade squid Ink Pasta and “cured epideris”.

Well this year Halloween was not going to get away with just once post apparently. When I was hunting for black food coloring I came close to using squid ink in a sweet out of desperation to get my black color. My pastry chef friend Karyn saved that day … but now I really wanted to use the squid ink to. Fresh made Squid Ink Pasta to the rescue. Throw in some pumpkin for color and atmosphere, and a little bit of suspicious meat: Squid Ink Pasta with Pumpkin and Cured Epidermis.

Happy Halloween buaaahahahaha!
