Curious about Spätzlesalat (Cold Spätzle Salad)?

Want to surprise guests with a new kind of cold salad? Then try this Spätzle Salad, a special egg noodle, served with fresh veggies, bacon, cheese and a light dressing.

My new food obsession is spätzle (or spaetzel)! I consumed large amounts of it during my summer vacation in Austria and Hungary. What are they? Well they are like a cross between dumplings and soft egg noodles. You will find them in almost every plate served to you in Central European countries. Spätzle means “little sparrow”. Almost all countries have the same spelling, yet in Hungary they are usually called nokedli. After reading this post you will be able to prepare your own delicious cold spätzle salad which will be a hit at your next pot-luck party.

And finally, a bonus at the end of the post with a few pics from my summer vacation! 🙂

Irish Bacon Cabbage Millet Soup

Enjoy this lovely and healthy gluten-free Irish Bacon Cabbage Millet Soup for this Saint Patrick’s day! It is just perfect to stay warm during the parade!

It’s Food ‘n Flix time again! In this monthly group a host picks a movie of their choice that pertains to food. Everyone watches the movie and then makes a recipe which the film inspired. It can be any recipe you want. This month’s pick is hosted by Joanne from What’s on the List and she challenged us to travel back in time and to Ireland with The Quiet Man!

Sweetheart Maple Bacon Shortbread

Fact: the real way to obtain your sweetheart’s love is through their stomach…with bacon! And this Maple Bacon Shortbread is a sure fire way to please.

A few weeks ago I attended a most fabulous themed pot-luck party: bacon! Everyone had to bring a dish made with bacon. We had bacon guacamole, a bacon cheddar apple pie, scotch eggs, bacon chocolate cupcakes. That was like a third of the menu. I brought a Maple Bacon Shortbread as one of two contributions.

Looking at my cookie cutter shapes I decided to go for a heart shaped one. And as soon as the cookies came out of the oven I knew this recipe was perfect for Saint-Valentine’s Day.

Triple Decker Sandwich in B Major: Brie Blueberry & Bacon

Warm summer temperatures usually means smaller and lighter meals. Salads and sandwiches are often found at the dinner table. So this month’s Creative Cooking Crew really hit the spot with June’s challenge: make a triple decker sandwich with at least 3 ingredients starting with the same letter of the alphabet. This was music to my ears so I composed a symphony in B’s: a Brie, Blueberry and Bacon Triple Decker Sandwich.

Breakfast Pizza for Food N Flix

Do you sometimes re-watch a movie you just adored in your teen years to see if you still feel the same way? I do occasionally. Sometimes they are still good, sometimes not. There is one movie however that never fails to live up to my original satisfaction and it just so happens that this particular film is this month’s Food ‘n Flix choice. OK enough suspense, the movie is The Breakfast Club.

Now there are not many food references in the movie besides the title and the scene of the lunch break but inspiration came easy. What do teenagers like to eat? Junk food, especially pizza. What is the most important meal of the day? Breakfast of course. So I think this Breakfast Pizza would be a hit with all pre and post pubescents.

Creative Cooking Crew: Candied Bacon and Apple Halva with Maple Gastrique

I am sure I have mentioned this before but just in case, I do not really watch cooking shows. So don’t say to me :have you heard of the latest crazy chef “enter name here”? Chances are you will be the first to tell me. I like cooking shows but I have trouble keeping full attention. It is the same with sports on TV. Of course I am aware of the hit shows, take Chopped for instance where a mystery basket of ingredients is given and must all be used in a recipe.

Well that is exactly our theme this month for the Creative Cooking Crew which is hosted by Lazaro Cooks and Foodalogue. I was really excited by this challenge. Give me weird stuff to mix up and I am a happy gal! The ingredients we were given were Granny Smith apples, nut butter, vinegar and bacon. When I read the list I had no idea what to make but I wanted the extra challenge of coming up with a dessert. My creation is a Candied Bacon and Apple Halva with Maple Gastrique.
